Walking the Path in Tibetan Buddhism: Lineage Training Program

Picture
This three year program is now available to all our Members through their membership login. The program was designed in response to the sincere interest of so many in our sangha who have expressed their wish to gradually explore the Buddhist path as a way to live in alignment with their deepest values and potential. It follows aspects of the path training Dharma Refuge's teacher, Sue Kochan received from her teacher Anam Thubten Rinpoche.

Lineage Training offers new and experienced participants the foundation necessary to enrich their spiritual development. It does this through a deeper exploration of the wisdom and practices associated with the progressive stages of the Buddhist path. This program uses The Three Wisdoms model of study, practice and inquiry.

In Tibetan Buddhism, practitioners utilize an intelligent and skillful system to awaken—a system that is designed to gracefully carry us from confusion to enlightenment. Our Lineage Training is an overview of this system and offers extensive training on two important texts:
  • The Sattipatana Sutta, also known as The Four Foundations of Mindfulness
  • The 37 Bodhisattva Practices

More Information:

Our lineage training program is available only as Membership benefit.

The first cycle of lineage training began in 2017 with teachings from Sue Kochan, our residential teacher, and Elizabeth Mattis Namgyel, Buddhist teacher, author, and scholar. Our second cycle of teachings featured a recorded program by Pema Chodron, teachings by Sue Kochan, and integrated readings and practice guidance.

Books used during this training:
  • Transformation and Healing: Sutra on the Four Establishments of Mindfulness, by Thich Nhat Hahn
  • The 37 Bodhisattva Practices commentary:
    • Reflections on Silver River by Ken Mcleod - book available through many retailers and libraries
    • The Heart of Compassion: The Thirty-seven Verses on the Practice of a Bodhisattva, by Dilgo Khentse Rinpoche

One talk from the 37 Bodhisattva Practices Series
Watch a review of verses 1-24 (from our first 4 sessions) of the 37 Bodhisattva Practices
in this teaching given by Dharma Refuge teacher, Sue Kochan.
I want to say "Calling all Bodhisattvas" because I can't think of a more important call to embrace right now. Perhaps the very best medicine for this time in the world is to have more bodhisattvas-in-training.

The
bodhisattva journey is a far-reaching one because we train the mind and heart in openness toward all beings without exception, and without conditions (starting with ourselves). It's a path of practice and study which, when undertaken with sincerity, has the power to recondition our way of being—interrupting our cycles of stress, overwhelm, and reactivity — and revealing our innate responsiveness, resilience, and grace.

Bodhisattvas-in-training make a commitment to a courageous life. It is a life fiercely dedicated to the “inside-out training” in love—love that frees us from the constrained ideas of right and wrong, good and bad, broken or healed, self and other.

Please consider joining us on this journey of healing and transformation, for the benefit of all.

—Sue Kochan

Our lineage
The wisdom that has been directly and authentically transmitted from teacher to student since the time of the Buddha is often called lineage. Our sangha's root teacher, Anam Thubten Rinpoche, who is a lineage holder in the Nyingma tradition. Sue Kochan has studied with many teachers and most extensively with Anam Thubten Rinpoche and H. E. Garchen Rinpoche. The teachings offered in this program flow from the blessings of this lineage.
